God has been gracious to us and has been with us through our journey of love and life. He has carried us through some of the most difficult times and has given us joy in the midst of sorrow. He has also been loving and given us abundant blessings. Most importantly, He has provided us with faith. May we share that faith with others.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Dave's Heart Surgery

Dave always knew he had a heart murmur. He found it in college. He also knew his family has a history of heart conditions. So, when he turned 40 I urged him to get his heart checked. Last October, Dave was raking leaves and he felt something was "off". He went to the heart clinic. They referred him right away to the cardiac team. They did more tests and an echocardiogram. They found that he needed a new valve & possible a new aortic root. The doctor said surgery should happen within the next year. Left untreated, he was sure to have a heart attack by 50. The surgery was scheduled for March 4th. Because this was a genetic condition, the doctor suggested we get our children checked. We explained that our children are adopted. But, it is amazing that Liam has the same genetic disorder in his valve.

March 4th - They took Dave back at about 7:30am. It took about an hour to start surgery. He got out of surgery around 2pm. I wasn't able to go back to see him until after 4pm. It was long day of waiting and praying. When I finally got back to see him, they were monitoring his vitals and giving him blood transfusions. They removed his breathing tube before I left for the night.

What I wrote on Facebook the night of surgery -
We promised - for better or worse, in sickness and in health. It is my honor to keep my vows to you. I know that you have done and will do the same for me. This is what love is... celebrating all the joys, carrying each other through the hard times, but also all the ordinary days in between. Those ordinary days seem like such gifts. I look forward to all the ordinary days ahead of us. I love you David Herman and I'm so incredibly proud of your courage today.

Dave did well at recovery, but it was a slow process.

After a week of recovery at the hospital, it was finally time to recover at home.

The road to recovery continues with cardiac therapy and appointments. We are thankful to God He helped us find this condition and it was operable. We are also thankful Dave will be with us for many more years thanks to God's grace and the skillful hands of his surgeon, Dr. Gray.
